What is Art? I find this topic interesting and ripe for discussion, especially with the advent and world takeover of Artificial Intelligence. We can now read poems and novels written by AI, listen to music and watch movies written and performed by AI, and put “paintings” on our walls created by AI. One of my favorite modern poets, Australia-based Erin Hanson, recently posted a poem on this subject. Here are a few lines from it: “I don’t know if they wrote this, and I can’t tell if that is real, and the kids share all their feelings with machines that cannot feel.” and “There is no meaning inside art that’s not passed through a human soul.” This resonates with me so deeply. To me, AI is in the same category as reproductions, which I often get asked if I sell. I did for a couple years, early in my career, but quickly learned that it wasn’t for me. I wasn’t snobby or judgmental about it, I just didn’t get joy from the process. Money is sometimes a barrier to the purchase of original art, which I totally understand. I discussed this in my July 2025 newsletter, The Fine Art of Buying Art. I really believe in the power of original art to create a feeling of refuge and am an advocate for living with blank walls while saving for an original. Or buy it and make payments; many artists, including me, are happy to arrange that. So, what is Art? Art is the direct expression of human creativity. Art comes from the artist’s own hand, own head, own heart. There’s no substitute. Warmly, Rachel (feeling philosophical) p.s. On numerous occasions, people have been so moved by my work they have stood in my booth and cried. That is the impact of original art. I can’t explain it and don’t take credit for it; in fact, I’m kind of awed by it. But there it is. It’s a beautiful thing. p.p.s. The Beast saga continues. The front end was floating at freeway speeds, so I took it in to have the tire pressure adjusted. All of you who pull trailers or drive rear-heavy trucks/vans know what I’m talking about. This brought to light issues with my (old) tires that put them at risk of a blowout (I’ve experienced a tire blowing out at 80mph…not taking that risk), so I purchased a new set. I figured I’d get the van aligned at the same time…nope. Had to get some tie rods and other such stuff replaced first. Combined with snow prediction in the mountains on my way to Denver, this clearly foretells a fabulous show this weekend. IYKYK.
