I am back to my old tricks of being late with newsletters, but here I am! My excuses this month are pickleball, hiking, time with kids and family, and pickleball. :) I got a TON of responses to last month’s newsletter, What is Art? I enjoyed the correspondence! I’m sharing an excerpt of just one of them here, with the permission of the author (and collector!), for your reading pleasure: Rachel, To me, AI is an incredible tool, but it's still just that, a tool. It can help execute an idea, but it can't replace the life experiences, intent, and emotion that make a piece of art meaningful. Your comment that there is "no meaning inside art that's not passed through a human soul" really stuck with me. I think that's why people stand in your booth and cry. They're connecting with something that came from Rachel, not just something that looks beautiful. I don't think AI diminishes original art. If anything, it has made me value it even more. I can generate thousands of interesting images, but I can't generate a Rachel Harvey painting. One is an output, the other is a piece of someone's life and perspective.
