Do you choose a Word of The Year? I tend to resist trends (I come from a long line of stubborn, obstinate, not to say ornery, Scots), but I’ve fallen hard for this one. This is my fourth year participating. In 2023 I chose “Pause.” For much of my life my modus operandi has been Seat-Of-My-Pants, so learning to take a breath, to take a beat, to slow down, did not come natural. I began keeping a list of instructions to myself, like “Pause to think how what I’m going to say might land.” or “Pause to consider what I actually want.” Over time, it has had a profound impact on my life and relationships. In 2024 I chose “Confident” but it never really took; I kept finding myself still needing to Pause. Ditto for 2025 when I chose “Accept/Fearless” but STILL found myself focusing on “Pause” for much of the year. Finally, I’m ready for a new word. Thank goodness. My word for 2026 is “Curiosity.” It’s “Pause”-adjacent and has been percolating for several months. It feels like a natural outgrowth of all the slowing down, considering, etc. Now that I’ve got more mental space before taking action, there’s room to wonder about the situation or person in front of me. So my plan is to focus on that this year, both in my personal life and in the studio. We’ll see how it goes! Warmly, Rachel (self-snitching, but ok with it) p.s.
